With [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen  in full swing, my Spidey fic in beta and reveals for [livejournal.com profile] hp_spring_fling  forthcoming, I'll soon have three fics available for public consumption. They couldn't be more different: het, slash, and gen are all represented and length varies wildly. All this has me thinking about reviews. Is there a number you expect to get, regardless of the genre or pairing? What do you consider a good response?

Two things I've noticed. My gen fics tend to have a higher percentage of substantive comments vs. "that was cute" etc. than my romance fics (except "Turnabout," which got some amazing reviews). I'm not sure why that is. The other is that popularity does not necessarily correlate with how much I liked it. "Second Kisses" is by far my most popular fics, but it's nowhere close to my personal favorite of my fics. My favorite is my [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen fic, and the jury's still out on that one. The anonymity is killing me. I want to take it, post it to every comm I can find and scream: I WROTE THIS!!! Heh. I'm sure I'm not the only exchange author who feels that way. May 22 is a long way away.

that's interesting I'm usually lucky if my gen material gets at least one comment. my best reviews have always come from challenges or contests of some sort, especially anonymous ones. For some people are just willing to give writers or characters they wouldn't normally read more of a chance than normal.

My romance fics tend to get somwhere in the 25-30 range; gen tends to get 20-25. For some reason, my gen fics tend to get a higher quality review on average. Some fics have gotten less. My slash fic looks like it'll end up somewhere in the late teens. And I'll consider it a miracle if the Peter/Felicia cracks double digits.

Are you reading springtime_gen? There's some really good stuff being posted.

I haven't read springtime_gen yet, but I plan to start looking at it tomorrow.

There was a really good Draco fic posted yesterday: "The Family Business." I'm not a fan of Mr. Malfoy, but I enjoyed this.

Off topic, but are you aware of any non-LJ places to post Spidey and other Marvel-based fic? I posted the Peter/Felicia and the silence is deafening.

That was a good Draco story. I'm not a big fan of him myself, but I love the way they wrote him in this story.

the only non-LJ place that I can think of is fanfiction.net I know its not the best place, but you will get feedback and there are some real gems there.
