Dangerous Jobs for Girls Luna, Andromeda, and Astoria Greengrass fight post-war discrimination against the Slytherins. One of the most inventive and affecting fics I've read in a while. Go read it.
I'm up to 6,800 on the Big bang fic. I had 7800 at one point, but the scene as written simply didn't work. It's this kind of thing -- having to throw out a whole day's work and replace it with a new (albeit hopefully better scene) that makes me question why I wanted to do a novella in the first place. Since yesterday and  today were a wash, I'm going to try dedicating tomorrow to nothing but writing.

So, I've returned to the Hermione Big Bang and eked out another 1000 words. It's entirely possible I've lost my mind, but after years of never finishing anything, I feel awful for abandoning it. Goal for today: hit 8000 words. (current count: 6354)

On another note, would any of you be interested in a bit of  "how I write" meta? I use speech recognition software, and I thought it might be interesting to go into how that affects my writing process.
Upon reflection, I feel like pond scum for abandoning my C/Hr. So I put it to you, dear readers, which would you rather see:

1. More one-shots with various characters and pairings.

2. The C/Hr. Harry dies in GoF Hermione and Cedric travel in time to try to set things right. 20,000-25,000 words

3. AU. After OotP Severus wishes for a world where he never called Lily a mudblood and married her. Harry wishes for a world where Sirius never died. They get their wish. Unfortunately, it's also a world where Voldemort is on the brink of victory, James is a DE, Hermione is ignorant of magic, and Remus, Ron, and Dumbledore are dead. Harry, Lily, Luna, a very bitter Ginny and others team up to fight Voldemort. Snape/Lily, and Harry/Luna feature, but it's mostly a war story with a strong emphasis on the familial bond between Snape/Harry/Lily. 50,000+ words

I am declaring my [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang story officially dead in the water. I just can't get motivated to write it. I still think the basic idea is good, but there are other characters (and fandoms) that interest me more. I am thinking of signing up for [livejournal.com profile] severusbigbang just to see if I could write a long fic. One of the first ideas I ever had was a truly massive AU featuring Snape, and at this point I'm curious to see if I really can write a novella/novel.

Go read The Family Business at [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen It's awesome. I don't even like Draco, and I love it.

(This post so I can officially say I recced it after gushing about it in comments to various fen)

[livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen continues apace, but some of the fics haven't gotten the response I think they deserve, so I'm setting a little challenge. If you post reviews to ten fics, I will write a fic for you with a minimum of 1000 words. Comment here with your request, and feel free to include what kinds of things you like in your fic. I'm also willing to do continuations/missing scenes of any fic I've written. I will write about most characters. (though please have mercy and don't choose a character mentioned once in passing). I'm more limited in my pairing choices: no non cross-gen or teacher student relationships, and my slash repertoire is limited to Harry/Cedric and James/Sirius. Also, feel free to guess what I wrote, though my fic hasn't necessarily been posted yet.
Title: The Hobgoblin's Return
Pairing: Peter/Felicia
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 6600
Summary: TAS based. The Hobgoblin escapes from prison. Felicia faces her demons.

With [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen  in full swing, my Spidey fic in beta and reveals for [livejournal.com profile] hp_spring_fling  forthcoming, I'll soon have three fics available for public consumption. They couldn't be more different: het, slash, and gen are all represented and length varies wildly. All this has me thinking about reviews. Is there a number you expect to get, regardless of the genre or pairing? What do you consider a good response?

Two things I've noticed. My gen fics tend to have a higher percentage of substantive comments vs. "that was cute" etc. than my romance fics (except "Turnabout," which got some amazing reviews). I'm not sure why that is. The other is that popularity does not necessarily correlate with how much I liked it. "Second Kisses" is by far my most popular fics, but it's nowhere close to my personal favorite of my fics. My favorite is my [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen fic, and the jury's still out on that one. The anonymity is killing me. I want to take it, post it to every comm I can find and scream: I WROTE THIS!!! Heh. I'm sure I'm not the only exchange author who feels that way. May 22 is a long way away.

The Spider-Man fic that ate my brain is done and off to the beta. I hope it goes over well. For this fandom I'd define going over well as "getting any reviews at all."

I'd also like to rec a beautiful [livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen story: Half-Sick of Shadows The author has an excellent grasp of language and metaphor and captures Merope very well. Go read it. Go read the other entries too. There's some good stuff being written.
[livejournal.com profile] springtime_gen is due to start posting today, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting. It's harder to wait for a few hours than a few weeks.

The Spider-Man fic is going well and should be done by the end of the week. My beta is going to kill me. Everyone uses so many aliases in canon that sometimes it feels like you can't tell the players without a scorecard.

ETA: And they've started posting. Now I can start worrying over how many reviews I'll get and whether my recipient will like it.

I just got the first two volumes of Runaways and vol. 2 and 3 of Ultmate Spider-Man. They are every bit as awesome as I was led to believe. I'll be picking up the first Iron Man trade as soon as I can (flipped through it a comics shop and liked it). Would like to get into Captain America as well, as soon as I can figure out an entry point. I think I might have some new fandoms. My love for HP has been suffocated by the ever-increasing whining-to-goodfic ratio. My exchange fics will be posted, and there's one or two Cedric/Luna stories in me, but mostly I feel like I've done all I want to do with HP. It's been a fun ride.
I'm working on a Spider-man fic (90s cartoon) to fulfill someone's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide New Year's Resolution request. I fully expect it to go over like a lead balloon, but it's a story I really want to tell. And since there are only two short fics in this pairing, I get to tread new ground :) My Hermione/Cedric fic is going to be on the back burner for a bit. I'll try to finish on deadline, but I'm okay with not finishing on time. I'm not a "get it all down and fix it later" writer, which is what Big Bangs (the rough draft phase, anyway) are geared to.

I've purchased the first three volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man from Amazon. I've always wanted to get into comics, but I found the continuity too intimidating. I'm taking the plunge now because I find myself growing bored and frustrated with the Harry Potter fandom. I'm not leaving, but I need a new hobby. Anyobody got any other recs for titles I should try? (Keeping in mind that while I know who the major players are in Marvel and DC, my previous exposure to comics is one Batman omnibus). Also nothing too graphic or adult.

Bid Time Return is at 6300 words. Writing has been very slow over the last few days (6-700 words), but I remain hopeful that it will pick up again soon. New chapters are like new stories, and I always start slow.

[livejournal.com profile] phil_urich wrote me a lovely Peter/Felicia Spider-man fic. You can read it here. *beats own plot bunny away with a stick*
I've finished chapter one of Bid Time Return. I find myself unexpectedly desperate for feedback. Not detailed edits, but just a general sense of how the beginning works.
Crossposted from the Hermione Big Bang Author's comm for those interested in what I'm up to:

I'm up to 4300 and change in my Cedric/Hermione AU fic (Harry sacrifices himself for Cedric in the graveyard. Hermione and Cedric time travel to save him), and Harry's not even dead yet. It's looking like this fic (barring massive problems) will be WELL over 20k, and that's after I decided to narrow the scope to Cedric and Hermione's initial time traveling instead of trying to cram years 4-7 into one fic. Sequels ahoy!  I'm not sure if this installment will be a full-fledged novel, but it looks like I'll be dealing with this plot bunny for some time to come. My beta's going to kill me. Now if I could just come up with a title...

[livejournal.com profile] minisinoo has recced Evidence of Things Not Seen. I'm thrilled and honored. Min's articles were essential in motivating me to post my first fic.

The [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang fic is back on track. I fired off a new plot bunny to my beta. While I was typing it out it turned into a genuine outline. Hopefully this one will go better.
I have a feeling I'm going to end up dropping out of [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang . My plot ideas keep running of the rails or I discover a gaping plot hole, etc. Qute frankly, I don't like any of my plots. I'm not a huge Hermione fan, so it's a struggle to get the bunnies to hop. If this were a Cedric or Luna Big Bang, I probably could have written half of War and Peace by now. Add in the fact that I have a non-HP fic, that's practically demanding to be written, and I fear it's a recipe for disaster.
